ACT Prep

Test taking is a skill! In this class you’ll learn the skills and tricks you need to score well on the ACT.

You’ll start by taking a practice exam in the same environment as the actual ACT to get a baseline score. For homework, you’ll complete practice questions in each of the 3 ACT areas, and then we’ll go over which ones you missed in class. Over the course of the semester, you’ll start to find patterns in questions and learn how you can go faster and answer more confidently. You’ll also learn overall test taking strategies that will improve your score immediately.

At the end of the semester, you’ll take a second practice ACT to see how you improved over the course of the semester. You can also sign up to take it at your local school your junior year and on the ACT website.

Prerequisites

Materials Required

A 4-function, scientific, or graphing calculator. While there are many options out there, we strongly recommend one of these two, depending on the level of math you know.

Best calculator for basic ACT calculations, including fractions, exponents, and parentheses can be found here.

Most functions allowed on the ACT - will graph most difficult ACT questions can be found here.

For more information about using calculators on the ACT can be found here.

Homework

1-2+ hrs every week (answering test questions + any additional studying/test taking you want to do on your own, including your math homework)

Notes

This year the ACT test is changing!! Overall the test will be shorter - 75 less minutes and 44 less questions. Students will receive more time per question. The math section will now have 4 answer choices instead of 5. And science will now be an optional test section. We will take these changes into account as we teach the class.

Even though the science section is now optional, we will suggest resources for students who will be choosing to take that section of the test to practice on their own. For some universities the science score might be required or highly recommended for STEM programs. We will focus our time in class on the other three sections of the ACT.

It would be helpful to work on math (especially Algebra) over the summer, if you have not yet learned it. We will be discussing the math section and answering math questions in class. However, you should work on your own math curriculum at home as well.

Books Students Provide

None. Since the ACT changed this year there is not as many prep books yet. We will provide the Official ACT Prep Guide 2025-2026 Book for the class and notify you of additional study materials as they become available.
