Constitution Journal
This week you will start writing the Constitution in your own words. This may be a little challenging at first but I promise as you try, it will get easier. And if you stay caught up each week, you will be able to easily finish it and earn your reward. First, read the the section of the constitution. Do you understand what it is saying? Then you can look online to help you understand what it means. This link here is helpful.
Here is a document that has the constitution simplified. Here is another document you can look at to help you. Here is another website. You can also google words too! If you find another resource that is helping you understand what the constitution means, let us know!
Write down in your own words what each part of the constitution is saying in your journal. You don’t have to rewrite it word for word. Just say it in your own words.
Also, in your journal I use the word paragraph to break up the constitution for you, but the correct word is clause. So if you read online the word clause it is another word for paragraph.
This week complete pages 1 & 2 of your constitution journal.
Opinion Paper
This week’s opinion paper topic is:
Knowing all that you have learned about the founding up to this point, why do you think the words “We the People” are so powerful? How would a new American citizen explain the magnitude of these words to his or her family members back in another country?
Watch this video about Valley Forge
In class next week we will be talking about Valley Forge. Please watch this video so what we do in class will make more sense to you.
Weekly Check-in
Fill out the Check-in sheet. Staple your opinion paper to the check-in sheet.
Learn about George Washington!
George Washington’s birthday is coming up! We are going to have a birthday party for him and play a game about him in a few weeks on February 22nd. For the next few weeks spend a little bit of time learning about him so you can be prepared for our game! Here is a document where you can learn more about our first US President.
If you didn’t watch these videos last week, watch them this week.
Parody of the signing of the Declaration of Independence
A parody is a when an author is imitating something in a mocking or humorous way. Watch this parody of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Why didn’t George Washington sign the Declaration of Independence?
It may be surprising to find out that George Washington didn’t sign the Declaration of Independence. Why didn’t he sign it? He didn’t sign it because he was commanding the troops of the Continental Army in New York. Here is a reenactment of the signing of Declaration of Independence and George Washington reading the Declaration to his troops.
