Global Citizenship

Prepare to be a global citizen who is educated, compassionate, and ready to serve in your community and world! This class will have both a learning and service component.

Learning: Our first semester we will examine digital media and free speech in a rapidly changing modern world. We will discuss democracy, local engagement, and elections while following the American elections. During our second semester, we will dig deep into the history and context of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and global politics, specifically China/US relations.

Service: An essential component of our class will be the opportunity to personally engage in world events by becoming an English conversation buddy with a Ukrainian teenager. You and your partner will meet once a week for an hour. We hope over the course of our class you will develop a friendship with your buddy and learn firsthand what life is like for teens living in through the Russia/Ukrainian war. We will be volunteering through an organization called EnGIN that will provide you with plenty of support, training, and discussion materials to help you and your new friend have a great experience. And every minute of your volunteer time is counted as homework time for our class!

Notes

This is a high-level geopolitics class that will be discussing current events and their historical context. As such, class content may have challenging topics and materials such as: violence (war), profanity (in real-life events) and upsetting content (authoritarianism is ugly!) We will do our best to provide you with age-appropriate materials, but by the nature of the content this will be a challenging, more adult level class. You are always free to skip or adjust or request substitutions for any class content.
